Tom Seiberling

Meet Tom Seiberling from Lancaster, Ohio.

I've been an America fan since the release of their first album. Like them I spent some time growing up overseas living in Colombia, Turkey, and Taiwan. I've had the opportunity to see America twice - twenty years apart. I'm an acoustic guitarist/singer and perform in local clubs. I play quite a few America songs. Of the music I perform, it is America's music that gets the most favorable response. These are great songs and very familiar to most of the audience. I guess in my own way I keep America's music alive and well.

Note from Steve Lowry

Tom used to have a link to a web page that listed many of the songs that he played as well as some of the venues. A computer crash caused the loss of his website and in June of 1997 I received a request from him to remove the link to the website. He mentioned to me that he was going in for a bone marrow transplant and he wouldn't be able to get the page going again until after the surgery. I shared with him my experience with cancer surgery in 1993 and wished him the best. He felt very confident that he had caught his rare disease early enough that he would be able to win the battle.

In late August I wrote letter to Tom asking how he was doing. I received the following reply.

Dear Steve,

As you know Tom was scheduled for a bone marrow transplant in July. About one week prior to his scheduled admission for the procedure, Tom came down with a virus. Despite the very best of care from wonderful doctors and nurses Tom's weakened immune system could not fight any longer. He died on August 12. We miss him terribly.

Julie Seiberling

I was shocked to receive such unexpected news. I sent a message to Julie expressing my deepest sympathy. I wondered if I should remove Tom's web page or leave it as monument to his life. I decided to do the latter. I didn't know Tom very well but I felt like we had a lot in common those last few months. We were both fighting a battle which I was lucky enough to win, and which he, unfortunately, lost. But his memory will linger on in the hearts and thoughts of those who knew him.

So this page remains in memory of Tom Seiberling
