Meet Gene Murrell from Mobile, Alabama (formerly Costa Mesa, California).

I live in Costa Mesa, California during most of the year but during the summer I live in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

I have older brothers and sisters, so I was introduced to great music of the late 60's and 70's at an early age. My sister used to have this VW beetle with an 8 track in it and she had AMERICA's first album in there. I used to hear it all the time. When HISTORY came out I was exposed to more of the music. Ventura, Tin Man, & Daisy were big favorites of mine. So I started getting slowly more into their music. In 1980 I was working as a camp counselor at a summer camp in Florida and I got sick. I was stuck in my cabin all night and I started listening to AMERICA LIVE (also on 8 track) over and over again. It grew on me and next thing you know I was a BIG America fan, especially of OLD MAN TOOK. That was the song that really got me. When I really started playing music, one of the first songs I learned was Tin Man... I've been playing ever since. I first saw the guys in October 1980 in Lakeland, Florida, when they opened for the Rossington Collins band. I have more stories but it would take way too long...

Here's a photo of me singing Tin Man with Barbara Bickmore and Kelly Ewles and another one of me at the Coach House the night that my band and Prof's band "Small Change" played (photos by Jim Nakao).

Update: July 17, 2014

Wow! I just read my bio and A LOT has happened since I last updated it 13 years ago. Since then I have moved from California to Mobile, Alabama after a stint on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where I got back into radio. I am now the assistant program director at WZEW-FM (92 ZEW) where I have been since 2006 with a break about a year ago. I still play music part time. Back in 2011 I had Dewey and Gerry in the studio with me before a concert they had that night. They were just starting their Holiday Harmony tour and they played a track from that CD live along with a few of their other hits. It was a great privilege to have them in the studio and to spend an hour interviewing them and listening to their music live. Click here to listen to the interview.

Feel free to send your comments or questions to Gene.
