When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain
And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain
In the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn
They will stare unbelieving at the last unicorn

When the first breath of winter through the flowers is icing
And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising
And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn
In the distance hear the laughter of the last unicorn

I'm alive, I'm alive

When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning
And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning
Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is torn
Look and see her how she sparkles, it's the last unicorn

I'm alive, I'm alive

Nineteen eighty-two also saw the appearance of The Last Unicorn, an animated fantasy film featuring songs by Jimmy Webb. As noted above, Webb had become friends with America some years earlier, and he asked Beckley and Bunnell to sing on three tracks. Gerry handled lead vocals on the film's title tune. "The movie had some of Jimmy's best work, and I loved being involved in it," he says. "With Jimmy, I always felt like Salieri [Mozart's composer rival] in Amadeus--I just don't think I'm capable of building anything quite that good with the amount of clay I was given. I use what he does for inspiration. 'The Last Unicorn' became a very successful song for us in Germany. We didn't realize it until we got over there and played it for people live."
